The observation deck „Top of the Rock“ is one of the most populars sights in New York City. On top of the GE Building you will get breathtaking vistas stretch for miles in every direction. You’ll see New York’s famous landmarks, including the Empire State Building, Times Square, the Hudson River, the East River, Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty. It is often considered the best panoramic city view, if only because it offers a view of the lovely amazing Empire State Building, which cannot be seen from its own observation deck.
The timed entry system and larger observation deck also results in shorter waiting times compared to the Empire State. What are the main informations, you need to know about “Top of the Rocks”?
The GE Building is was completed in 1933 as part of the Rockefeller Center. The famous Art Deco architect Raymond Hood led a team of Rockefeller architects. The GE Building is one of the most famous and recognized skyscrapers in New York. The observation deck atop the skyscraper, dubbed „Top of the Rock“, reopened to the public on November 1, 2005, after undergoing a $75 million renovation. It had been closed since 1986 to accommodate the renovation of the Rainbow The deck, which is built to resemble the deck of an ocean liner, offers sightseers a bird’s eye view of the city, competing with the 86th floor observatory of the Empire State Building. On the 67th&68th floor you´ll entry the observation deck. Here you are behind panorama windows, but you´re invited to get a first impression of the beautiful view of Manhattan. On 70th floor its getting interesting, because now you´re outside and really on top of the rock.
Daytime or night-time – anytime is the right time to visit the Top of the Rock Observation Deck. Basically there are no lines you have to wait in. When the weather is fine, the view reaches to Brooklyn and New Jersey. At nighttime you find yourself over millions of citylights and advertisements. The most amazing time is half an hour before sunset, then you have a vista at daytime, enjoy the beautiful sunset and see the city with all its bright lights at nighttime. It´s the perfect mix of everything. But finally it´s your choice, what you prefer to see.
Buying the tickets is easy. There are a lot of options you can choose of. Purchase a timed ticked to avoid lines or purchase an unscheduled ticket and redeem for the time of your choice. You also can purchase a Sun & Stars ticket and visit twice in one day. Or upgrade to their Premier Pass and receive a free viewfinder and souvenir digital photo. You just have to look online and compare, whats your favorite one. The best prices you´ll find here.
By the way: as a owner of the New York Pass the entry for the observation deck is included. You want to find out more about the New York Pass?
Even if you have your tickets in advance, schedule half an hours until you´re on top of the rock. How long you´re going to stay is up to you. The tickets are not limited.
Before you are allowed to enter the observation deck you have to pass a security check. So please make sure, that you don´t have any dangerous items with you, no glass and no tripods.
My conclusion: Top of the rock is a better alternative as Empire State, because you´re in so fast and don´t have to wait in line so long like you have to at Empire State Building. The view is amazing and especially at nighttime the vista of the Empire State Building is breathtaking.
